The World of Death
In the earliest tales, the hero or heroine descends into death, seeking enlightenment. In later tales, this is transformed into the magical world, be it Oz or Neverland, the underground kingdom of elves or goblins, the underwater world of sirens and Grendel, the shadowy world of the unconscious, the alternate world of science fiction. Between them lies the threshold: the train of Narnia or Harry Potter, the tornado, the golden doorway.
